Mind and body without interaction

Descartes was stuck: how does an immaterial mind push a physical body? Spinoza’s answer is startling — it doesn’t, it never did, and there was never a problem to begin with.

Recall Descartes’ predicament. Mind (res cogitans) and body (res extensa) are two entirely different substances, yet they clearly seem to affect each other — you decide to raise your arm and it rises; a pin pricks you and you feel pain. Descartes proposed they interact (he even guessed at the pineal gland as the meeting point). But how can something with no size or location shove something physical? This is the mind-body interaction problem, and it dogged him.

Spinoza dissolves the problem by denying its setup. For him mind and body are not two substances. Thought and Extension are two attributes of the one substance (last lesson). So a body and its mind are not two things that need to reach across a gap — they are two expressions of the same thing.

The keystone is Ethics II, Prop. 7: “The order and connection of ideas is the same as the order and connection of things” (ordo et connexio idearum idem est ac ordo et connexio rerum). Whatever structure the chain of physical things has, the chain of ideas mirrors exactly — because both are the same structure read under two different attributes. This is Spinoza’s doctrine of parallelism.

Spinoza then makes the identity razor-sharp (Ethics II, Prop. 7, Scholium): a mode of Extension and the idea of that mode are “one and the same thing, but expressed in two ways.” A circle existing in nature and the idea of that circle are the same thing conceived now under Extension, now under Thought. So a body and its mind are numerically one thing viewed under two attributes — not two things, however tightly linked.

From this comes Spinoza’s definition of the human mind: the human mind just is the idea of the human body (Ethics II, Prop. 13). Your mind is not a ghost piloting a machine. It is what your body is when the very same reality is expressed under the attribute of Thought. Mind and body are one individual, twice described.

For Spinoza, what is the relationship between a body and its mind?

Now the sharp consequence: there is no causal interaction between mind and body. Each attribute is causally closed — physical events have only physical causes and mental events have only mental causes. “The body cannot determine the mind to think, nor the mind the body to motion or rest” (Ethics III, Prop. 2). Your arm’s rising has a purely physical cause; your decision has a purely mental cause. Neither pushes the other.

Then why do decision and arm-motion line up so perfectly? Not because one pushes the other, but because they are the same event read under two attributes. The mental series and the physical series can never come apart — not through a magic link, but because they are one series described twice. Descartes’ question “how does the mind move the body?” turns out to be malformed: it assumes two things where there is one.

Parallelism has a sweeping reach. Prop. 7 applies to every mode of Extension, not just human brains: each physical thing has a corresponding idea under the attribute of Thought. So everything, in its degree, “is animate, albeit in different degrees” (Ethics II, Prop. 13, Scholium). This is a kind of panpsychism — not that rocks have rich conscious lives, but that every body has a corresponding idea, a mental aspect, however minimal.

Why does Descartes' mind-body interaction problem not arise for Spinoza?
